Damage caused to mural by scaffolding

In detail, we can see how the pole has taken chunks out of the mural

This portrait of Alderman Tyack has been disfigured by bad filling and discoloured retouching that has distorted his face...

After the removal of the retouching we can see where cracks have been cut back in a previous restoration attempt...

Sympathetic retouching brings back the original shape of Tyack's face, with no unsightly mis-matched colour.

Phase One of the Newport project lasted from October - December 2002. During this time, The "George St. Bridge", "Bridging", "Celtic Settlement", the "Romans at Caerleon", the "Coming of Christianity" and the "Building of Tintern Abbey" Murals were conserved and restored. These were considered to be the most damaged murals.
